Yep, Supercheap Auto cans I didn't even own a compressor at that stage of the build Borrowed one (a Supercheap 1HP toy) for the colour spraying!

What you see is just a quick DIY tidy up to bring the crappy engine bay up to the same standard as the Jap '1/2 Day Auto Paint' job on the exterior...

I beated/painted the engine bay in the shed myself for under 200 bucks all up ($20 panel beating hammer kit, wet/dry paper, 3M drip check, (Fully)Sikaflex, filler, primer/filler cans and 2PAK colour)

This paint will be all stripped out again when I do the body/paint refurb in a few years when I can afford it (or when Fitzy Industries offers to do it for me )

Here's the story of the car and current specs:

1971 Datsun Bluebird 1800SSS Coupe

The previous owner (Paul) privately imported this coupe into Australia in 2002. It arrived fitted with an S13 SR20DET that had been dodgily installed by it's original owner in Japan. The engine and conversion kit were sold locally prior to me purchasing the car in Oct 2003.

The condition of the car was pretty good on arrival in Australia. The body had been resprayed in Japan, but the engine bay featured some fairly daggy 15+ y/o paint requiring stripping/a bit of rust repair/beating and respraying. I fitted some locally sourced seats, harnesses and carpet to give the interior a $600 lift.

The build up to what you see on these pages took place between Dec 2004 and March 2007, with engineers cert and rego acquired just 3 working days prior to driving SYD-MEL for the Phillip Island Nissan/Datsun Sports Nationals at Easter! In the time it took me to build the car our family grew from 1 to 3 kids, my wife and I sold and bought a house and I had a fairly major change of jobs.... no wonder it took a while!

I plan to iron out any mechanical bugs over the next 3 or so years (not that there really are any ) then strip the car down and give it a complete bare metal show condition rebuild. Will also be doing some serious rust prevention and body strengthening as done (bloody well) by Nik sr20datsun to his 4dr in Melbourne. Gotta make this baby last forever!
