  1. Fitting A 1600 Rear Suspension In A 1200 Coupe?

Just to update this neverending build... Decided to get some sexy Japanese flares... Painted to match and installed... Pulled the rear crossmember back out to slot the LCA mounts to make the camber and toe adjustable... Then put it all back in and it works a treat. How the engine bay looks as of now... And how the suspension sits as of now (may go lower)... As you can see, I fit a sedan grill, and I'm about to fit a MK1 Golf spoiler. I'll try to update this thread better now than I have been...

Thanks! I love it, but it's been the neverending project. Hope to have it done by the end of this year.

And no, not in love with those lower shock mounts. They work perfectly, but aren't very pretty. May re-do them at some point when the OCD takes over...

Made some upper spring mounts (sorry no pic), bolted it all in, and away we went...

Shocks mounted up. These were the shortest I could find but have plenty of stroke from the looks of things... Mounting brackets for the crossmember... Test fit on the car... welding them on... After cleaning and painting... Diff serviced, cleaned and painted... Control arms cleaned and painted... Mock up to see where the springs land...
  6. Photography

Took the kiddos to the beach last weekend, so since I recently bought a Holga 120N I thought I would load up some B&W film and see what I could get. Here's two...

And for grins, Graham's IRS 1200 in action...
  8. Fitting A 1600 Rear Suspension In A 1200 Coupe?

Main reasons are: Simplicity: Very few moving parts, easy to adjust, easy to work on. Size: Most of the other stuff I looked at was just too wide. S13 looks nice but even narrowing it as much as possible I think it's still way too wide. Miata looks good for this but required serious chopping of the floor pan. Toughness: For what I'm doing with them, these bits are very robust. Hidden ulterior motives: My goal was not necessarily to build the absolute best handling set-up period. I am not cutting and welding on the car. At all. Graham did weld-in shock towers, I am not. One of my main goals when I started this was to do the conversion in such a way that nothing was done to the car itself that couldn't be easily un-done and swapped back to a live axle in a day.

Or did you mean upper shock mounts? If so, here's how he did that:
  10. Fitting A 1600 Rear Suspension In A 1200 Coupe?

Looks like he welded up some extra metal onto the surface of the stock frame rail. And then welded up some more. And then a bit more metal for good measure. I don't think that is quite necessary. But again, he was building a rallye car. I am not.
  11. Fitting A 1600 Rear Suspension In A 1200 Coupe?

I don't fancy the way he did the shocks, but he needed lots of suspension travel (rally car) and I don't. Mine will likely be done more like the GC10 Skyline set-up:

For grins, here's some pics of Graham's car (which mine is being modeled after):

Better pics to come when it's done. This is where I'm at now. Need to finish the front mounts for the crossmember, sort out how to fit up the springs (should be miminal fuss) and sort out how to mount some shocks (that's the biggest question mark right now). Oddly, the 1600 spring pockets line up perfectly with the 1200 frame rails. Need to make an upper spring mount on the frame rail and we should be good.

    No interest then?

Mock-up: This is going to be lovely...
